Each building on The Morris Estate comes with a story. As E.M. Morris established his country estate in Southwest Michigan, he built many structures for the working farm in the 1930s. His daughter, Mary Lou Leighton, continued the tradition by building an estate home, The River House. She also saved many local buildings from demolition by moving them onsite.

The Blacksmith Lodge, Red Horse Inn, and Millstone Inn feature original structures with storied pasts, and they have undergone renovations to create beautifully furnished accommodations for your visit to stay in Niles and the Michigan countryside.

Our private cabins offer an intimate escape where history, nature, and comfort converge. The Millstone Inn draws its name from antique millstones unearthed during renovations, and its roots stretch back to 1937 when the family built it as a beloved “sugar shack” for maple syrup season. The Red Horse Inn carries an even older legacy, believed to have begun as a fur trading post in the 1800s before being floated down the river to its current perch on a bluff overlooking the water. Each cabin features a wood-burning fireplace, fully equipped kitchenette, and access to walking trails and the historic covered bridge, with breakfast and welcome snacks included, offering everything you need to slow down, settle in, and make memories of your own.

Each 240-square-foot retreat sleeps two and is thoughtfully designed with handcrafted hardwood cabinetry, sophisticated leather seating, a queen-size power-adjustable bed, and a luxurious private bathroom, all tucked into a serene, secluded setting. A fully equipped kitchenette, Klipsch audio sound system, and lift TV make every moment comfortable, while the shared outdoor lounging space overlooks the pond and gazebo just steps from the Blacksmith Lodge and the Chapel.

With over 600 acres to explore, The Morris Estate offers countless outdoor experiences for nature lovers. Scenic walking paths along the flowing river or through the towering trees provide miles of exploration. Spot wildlife along the way, such as deer, turkeys, groundhogs, hawks, owls, or our resident Bald Eagle couple.
